Phono Analytica’s development approach takes into account publicly available forensic guidance and established principles of professional forensic practice.

This includes relevant material published by the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes and its Forensic Speech and Audio Analysis Working Group, including guidance concerning digital audio authenticity analysis.

These references contribute to the general design philosophy behind the software: preservation of source material, documented procedures, appropriate validation, transparent processing, reviewable results, competent use and clear technical reporting.

Other recognised guidance and good-practice material within forensic audio and digital multimedia examination may also be considered where relevant to the purpose of an application.

Selected stages of forensic audio work can involve repetitive operations, recurring measurements, repeated technical checks and the manual organisation of large quantities of information.

Phono Analytica is being designed to automate appropriate parts of these activities where automation can improve efficiency, consistency and organisation.

The purpose is not to transfer the examiner’s responsibility to the software. The user should remain able to select the procedure, inspect the relevant parameters, review the generated result and determine its significance within the context of the examination.

Automatically generated measurements, alerts or classifications should be treated as technical assistance. They should not be presented as self-sufficient forensic conclusions.
