Phono Analytica was founded by Roberto Ruggeri, an independent forensic audio specialist with more than twenty years of professional experience in sound and audio technology.
The company grew out of a career spanning radio, television, music production, audio post-production and live sound, followed by direct work in forensic audio examination.
That combined experience led to a clear objective: to develop specialist software around the real tasks, decisions and documentation required of the forensic audio examiner.
More Than Twenty Years Across Professional Audio
Roberto began his formal audio training in 2003 at SAE Institute in Milan. His professional path subsequently developed across radio, television, music production, audio post-production and live sound.
These different environments gave him practical knowledge of recording systems, signal flow, editing, processing, monitoring, file conversion, transmission and the preparation of audio for different professional purposes.
Rather than coming from a single specialisation, his forensic work is supported by experience gained throughout the wider audio-production chain.
Applying Audio Experience to Recorded Evidence
Forensic audio work changed the purpose for which Roberto used his technical experience. A recording is no longer treated as creative material, but as evidence whose characteristics, history and limitations must be examined.
Knowledge of recording chains, acoustic conditions, editing, compression, conversion and previous processing helps him assess why a file sounds and behaves as it does.
The objective is to establish what can be technically observed, measured and documented—and to distinguish those findings from conclusions the available material cannot reliably support.
Software Conceived from the Examiner’s Point of View
During forensic casework, Roberto identified a recurring contrast. Conventional professional audio applications have generally developed graphical environments intended for fast, frequent use. Forensic software may offer highly specialised capabilities, but its interface can be more austere, fragmented and difficult to navigate.
When functions, parameters, comparisons and exports are distributed across different panels or applications, the examiner spends more time managing the software instead of examining the material.
