METADATICA

Licensing Information

Metadatica’s proprietary Standard Individual Licence for personal and independent professional use, separate arrangements for organisations, and the open-source licences of third-party engines and browser components.

The commercial licence covers Metadatica’s original application components. Third-party code remains governed by its own licences; the two sets of rights are described separately below.

Updated: 13 October 2026.

1. Standard Individual Licence

The standard Metadatica FULL licence is for a natural person purchasing in their own name as the sole authorised user. It covers personal use and use in the licensee’s own independent professional practice, including a forensic examiner, freelancer or sole practitioner working individually.

It is an individual licence, not a shared team or organisational licence. Sharing the licence or activation credentials with another person is not permitted. Rights independently granted by third-party component licences remain unaffected.

2. Professional services for clients

An individual licensee may use Metadatica to provide professional services to clients, including companies and public bodies, provided that only the licensee operates the software under their own licence.

Delivering analysis results or reports to a client does not transfer the licence or grant the client access to the software. An organisational licence is not required solely because the independent practitioner’s client is a company or public body.

3. Companies, public bodies and other organisations

The Standard Individual Licence does not cover purchases in the name of or on behalf of a company, public body, institution or other organisation, shared use by multiple people, or deployment for an organisation’s internal operations, even if only one employee would operate the software.

Organisations must contact Phono Analytica before purchase to discuss a separate licensing arrangement. Permitted users, installations and any other organisational conditions must be agreed separately in writing before supply. An enquiry does not itself grant a licence.

4. Installation, activation and changing computers

The supplied version, licence duration, permitted installations, technical requirements and activation or transfer arrangements are those expressly stated in the applicable offer and licence. This information page is not an activation service and does not grant extra installations.

When changing computers, the licence holder may request one additional supply of the installation package for the purchased version, by resending the package or providing renewed download access, subject to reasonable verification of the purchase and licence ownership.

The replacement download is not an additional licence or permission for shared use. Reactivation and transfer follow the arrangements applicable to the licence. The one-time replacement limit does not restrict remedies that the provider is legally required to provide for non-delivery, defects or other qualifying circumstances.

5. Support, purchaser rights and applicable terms

The purchase does not include an additional service of individual technical support, remote configuration, training or forensic interpretation of results. This does not exclude obligations concerning proper supply, conformity, updates required by law, complaints or mandatory purchaser rights.

The description “individual licence” does not by itself determine consumer status. That depends on the purpose of the purchase and the applicable law. This page does not change the withdrawal, refund or liability provisions in the applicable contract.

The information here summarises the licensing scope. Read the product offer and the terms supplied before purchase for the complete conditions applicable to the transaction. Later changes to this page do not retrospectively restrict rights already validly granted.

6. Web Demo and third-party components

The Web Demo and Metadatica FULL are different editions. Access to the DEMO does not grant a FULL licence, and a feature available in FULL must not be assumed to be available in the DEMO.

Third-party engines and open-source licences

Metadatica’s commercial application licence and the licences of its third-party components are separate. The individual-user and organisational restrictions described above apply to the proprietary Metadatica application; they do not remove rights independently granted by an open-source component’s own licence.

The entries below identify the main analysis engines and browser-support projects used by the documented editions. They distinguish desktop engines from Web Demo wrappers. Component versions and applicable notices must be read with the particular distribution or separately installed engine being used.

MediaInfo / MediaInfoLib

Used for technical media observations in the desktop workflow and through the browser build in the Web Demo. MediaInfoLib is developed by MediaArea.net SARL. The supplied licence materials reproduce BSD-2-Clause terms, requiring preservation of copyright notices, licence conditions and the disclaimer in the applicable source or binary distribution materials.

ExifTool

ExifTool is developed by Phil Harvey. Its upstream distribution is offered under the same terms as Perl: the original Artistic License or the GNU General Public License alternative identified by the project. These terms govern ExifTool itself, separately from any JavaScript or WebAssembly wrapper.

The Web Demo’s accompanying redistribution documentation uses the original Artistic licensing route for its ExifTool and Perl components. A browser port is not presented as the unmodified standard native distribution; its accompanying notices and source materials describe the relevant adaptations.

ffprobe / FFmpeg

ffprobe is part of the FFmpeg project and is an external engine in the desktop workflow. It is not an engine of the Web Demo. FFmpeg’s baseline licensing is LGPL version 2.1 or later; optional components can make a particular build subject to GPL terms or change the applicable version.

The exact executable’s licence, build configuration and accompanying notices determine the terms of that executable. This page does not assign one LGPL or GPL variant to every ffprobe build, and Metadatica’s proprietary licence does not relicense FFmpeg. Consult the licence information delivered with the engine, whether it was supplied with a package or obtained separately.

Web Demo wrappers and runtime

mediainfo.js: the browser integration project declares BSD-2-Clause licensing. MediaInfoLib and other components retain their own notices.

@uswriting/exiftool: the JavaScript/WebAssembly wrapper declares Apache License 2.0. That licence covers the wrapper, not a replacement licence for Phil Harvey’s ExifTool or for Perl.

ExifTool browser wrapper: official project and Apache licence

ZeroPerl: the porting project’s own code is under the MIT License. The @6over3/zeroperl-ts wrapper in the reviewed Web Demo package declares Apache License 2.0. Neither wrapper licence replaces the licences of the embedded Perl interpreter or its modules.

ZeroPerl: official project and MIT licence

ZeroPerl TypeScript wrapper: official project

Perl is copyrighted by Larry Wall and other contributors and is offered under the original Artistic License or GPL version 1 or later. Embedded modules and supporting libraries can carry additional notices. Their rights remain separate from Metadatica’s commercial terms.

Notices, licence texts and accompanying source materials

This overview is not an exhaustive inventory of every runtime library. Consult the component-specific notices, original licence texts and accompanying source materials for the version used. Supporting libraries and modules retain their own terms; an engine’s headline licence does not replace them.

The official links above identify the upstream projects and their licensing terms. They are not substitutes for the notices, modification disclosures, source materials or other items required to accompany a particular distributed build. The Web Demo package includes a licences directory and accompanying source materials; the desktop edition and separately installed engines have their own applicable documentation.

Where a third-party licence permits copying, modification, redistribution or other uses of that component, those rights are not restricted by Metadatica’s individual-user licence. Conversely, permission to use an open-source component does not itself grant access to proprietary Metadatica features. Copyrights and project names remain with their respective owners; inclusion does not imply their endorsement of Metadatica.

Third-party warranty disclaimers apply as stated in the respective licences. They do not remove mandatory purchaser rights or the obligations that Phono Analytica owes under the applicable product contract.
